Other graduate programs offered include those in the highly ranked Haas Business School, Graduate School of Education, Engineering College and Law School.

Berkeley is well established as a center of radical student activism: the Free Speech Movement – Berkeley 's student demonstration in 1964 in reaction to the government's ban on political speech – has received national recognition. Significant alumni include former US Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Earl Warren, Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley and actor John Cho, known for his appearance in the Harold and Kumar films. Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, who served as technical director of the Manhattan Project during World War II on the development of the atomic bomb, was a professor at Berkeley.

Berkeley is one of the 14 founding members of the Association of American Universities and is home to some world-renowned research institutes, including the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and the Space Sciences Laboratory.
