Mills College, in Oakland, California, is a private liberal arts and sciences college. Mills was founded in 1852, in Benicia, California, as the Young Ladies Seminary. In 1871, the school was moved to Oakland , California, and became the first college of women in the west of the Rockies. Mills College has breached the boundaries of STEM and higher education for women since its founding: in 1974 it became the first female college to offer a major in computer science, and it became the first female college in 2014 to adopt a transgender-admission policy. Psychology, English, pre-nursing, sociology, child development, economics and studio art are the most common undergraduate majors at Mills.
In 2018-19, 95%of all undergraduate students received financial assistance from Mills. It was also Mills' first year of cost reduction of 36%t, with cost at $28,765.
