John Muir Park

4202 Alhambra Ave, Martinez, CA 94553, United States

The John Muir National Historic Site is located in Martinez, Contra Costa County, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. This retains the 14-room Italianate Victorian house where the naturalist and writer John Muir lived, as well as a surrounding 325-acre (132 ha) tract of the Muir family’s native oak forests and grasslands. In the shadow of State Route 4, also known as the “John Muir Parkway," the main site is on the outskirts of town. This is a national historic park where you can see John Muir’s life and legacy.

By writing, Muir expressed his love of nature and encouraged people to preserve the wild places of our country, fostering the development of the National Park Service and the current conservation movement. Muir loved all wild animals, and saw human beings as a tiny part of nature. He not only admired the natural world for economic benefit but also for its beauty and healing properties. Muir championed the innovative concept of setting aside open areas for all to enjoy.

People will enjoy a picnic in the historic orchards of John Muir on top of Mount Wanda or under the shade of redwood and pecan trees. All groups are expected to take along any supplies or trash when they leave.

Mt. Wanda and the surrounding hills were popular hiking places for John Muir, and a place where he passed on his daughters ‘ love of nature.

At the John Muir National Historic Site anyone will view the natural scenery that Muir and his daughters visited in Martinez. The park works to conserve these landscapes and offer opportunities to enjoy them to present and future generations.

Mt. Wanda sits at 650 feet above sea level and consists of more than 325 acres of natural open space and hiking trails. This highlights the popular and varied natural ecosystems typically found in the Bay Area east of San Francisco.

The place is a secret gem in a sea of freeways and oil refineries in the National Park. It’s a perfect place to take in the children and grandparents. This is great for all ages. People will have a picnic and have enjoyed the scenery there. Don’t forget to get the children’s Junior Ranger badges. There’s a good hiking spot across the street. Visitors will enjoy a laid-back Sunday or any day here.

John Muir National Historic Site Collections include one of the world’s largest collections of John Muir related artefacts, documents, and natural history specimens. The collection is vital in providing a tangible connection to Muir’s life and work through educational initiatives, research opportunities, and on-site / offsite exhibition as well as virtual.
