The goal of Matthew Turner School is to provide students with a supportive and safe learning environment where they are motivated to reach their full potential, to contribute to our society, embrace and value others and to be empowered to shape their future with knowledge and skills.
The media center of the school library is the heart of the information access network. This provides students and staff with tools that enhance curriculums, promote learning and help students develop critical thinking skills inside and outside the walls of the library. In the spirit of enquiry, students use our library information center to read, study and follow their life-long learning quest.
The library Matthew Turner invites teachers, staff and parents to use their print tools. Students come to the library once a week to study formally and borrow but are welcome to browse, borrow, read and conduct research during open hours. The library training programme, which supports literacy in a variety of ways, fosters a rich and entertaining, multi-level resource collection. Students use print resources to carry out research tasks. Parent volunteers are key collaborators who contribute to runing the library system and raising money for library materials.
About Matthew Turner
Matthew Turner was the greatest individual shipbuilder in North America and in the 19th century the most prolific shipbuilder in the United States built 159 ships at his shipyard in South San Francisco and 169 at its yard. He won awards for courage in saving the seafarers in storms which were at great danger for himself and his ship, from Queen Victoria of England and King Haakon VII of Norway. True humanitarian, Turner ordered the reconstruction of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire on four new ships from his own pension fund. The ships of Matthew Turner were known to be extremely navigable and quick. The dolphin has been chosen to be the mascot of Turner Elementary School, because they are admired by Matthew Turner himself for size, intellect and helpfulness.
Matthew Turner Elementary has a fantastic 4th and 5th grader student council. The program is student-centered and student-driven with four students in Council of Students positions! Ms. Shelton (5th grade) and Ms. Moore (4th grade) are the Student Council teacher leaders. This year, they look forward to spiritual days and do what they can to make our school the best!
