Mary Farmar Elementary School provides a safe, stimulating learning atmosphere in which all children learn and prepare themselves for their decision to go to school. They will develop respect for themselves and others with a sense of cultural and individual diversity and appreciation.
The Center for Child Development of the Benicia Unified School District (CDU) offers a wide range of services for the needs of the children and families in Benicia. Pre-kindergarten programs are available in all our primary schools before and after school enrichment programs. We also run a subsidized state nursery that is eligible for employment. They deliver Robert Semple Elementary and Mary Farmar Elementary before and after classes. Joe Henderson Elementary is the location for our Stepping Stones Parent Participation Program.
The pre-kindergarten program is based on an approach to development. It ensures that the curriculum and instructional methods are both old and tailored to the children they serve. The activities of the program are primarily child-oriented. The program offers a range of activities and experiences which promote young children’s social-emotional, cognitive, language, physical and creative development. Each child has a chance to understand himself and others.
The school children’s program acts as a bridge between home and school. It provides a combination of educational, social and leisure opportunities, a healthy and secure atmosphere and a friendly, enjoyable way to encourage, foster, support and improve the development of children through School-age care programmes. Both children are people of equal value who come to a program and carry a unique mix of family background, language, and culture, temperament and learning style with them in their own developmental stages.
Stepping Stones Program
They also offer Stepping Stones, which enables parents, grandparents, babies or legal guardians to sign up for their two months or older child. Stepping Stones is a parent education class sponsored by the Child Development Department of the Unified School of Benicia. It is usually offered in 10 weeks of sessions all year round. Stepping Stones classes perform similar exercises to traditional pre-school classes. Every day parents actively involve their children, attend clubs together, engage in music, cooking or science projects and other events such as big motor sports, language time and snacks.
Social awareness building is one of the key activities of pre-school learning. In the early years, children develop the ability to play with others. By looking at their children at play, students are more aware of the nature and needs of children and are able to learn discipline, resolution of conflicts and advocacy. Stepping Stones also provides positive contact for the sharing of ideas and concerns between adults. For anyone interested in integrating parental support and quality time with their young people, it is a successful plan. Parent seminars are open to all parents to address child development and parenting problems.
