Liberty High School in 1962 was established. We are located in Benicia, 351 East J Street. Their main role is to support students with credit backgrounds or early graduation. Liberty High School was one of only 35 schools listed as a model Continuing High School by the California Department of Education in 2017. They are a small campus with less than 100 small class 15-20 students. Each student on their campus is known by names by all employees. Liberty is a school of choice in Benicia Unified for families. They represent primarily students over the age of 16 who are behind in loans. In addition, Liberty accepts students who want to graduate early or who want a limited learning environment.
The Benicia Rotary Club has been funding many of the events at Liberty High School for the past decade. Rotary raises thousands of dollars annually to improve our students ' independence experience. Historically, Rotary has sponsored their graduation ceremony, arts and science activities, field trips and their annual publications at the Benicia Yacht Club.
Local gardeners come to work with Liberty students every Wednesday. Students have the opportunity to gain additional credit and learn the value of growing their own food.
Liberty hosts a After School Art Club every Thursday with the support of Arts Benicia. During this time, visiting artists share with students a variety of mediums their creative gifts. Students go also to local studios and art galleries on field trips.
Big Picture Learning School
Students would be at the forefront of their own education in the schools that Big Picture Learning imagined. They spend time in the group under the guidance of mentors and they are not measured solely on the basis of standardized tests. The students would rather be evaluated on shows and demonstrations of achievement, motivation and habits of the mind, hand and heart–reflecting the real world assessments and evaluations confronting all of them in their daily lives.
